EXPERIENCE
Lisa J. Dessel practices extensively in the District of Columbia in a variety of real estate related areas, as well as on matters related to non-profit organization formation, administration and compliance. She is consistently recognized as one of the premier attorneys in her fields, and regularly provides judicial training for judges in the Civil Division of the Superior Court for the District of Columbia.
In the area of real estate law, Ms. Dessel represents many local property management companies, as well as property owners, and developers. She regularly litigates disputes involving residential and commercial landlord-tenant law, subsidized housing, purchase and sale, including statutory and regulatory purchase rights, and discrimination. Ms. Dessel has developed and taught training programs for property managers and staff covering all aspects of local real estate law.
Shortly after the Firm’s formation, Ms. Dessel and the Firm were retained as landlord-tenant counsel to the court-appointed receiver for the District of Columbia Housing Authority. In part through her effort and expertise, the receivership was lifted, and she has since continuously served as counsel for the Authority.
Ms. Dessel also enjoys a strong reputation on matters related to non-profit organizations, and devotes considerable time to her work with those organizations. She was a founding member of the Robert A. Shuker Memorial Fund, which was operated by judges and members of the District of Columbia Bar for the benefit of the District of Columbia students.
